October 2020 marks the beginning of the much-awaited Expo for which Dubai is all set to be transformed into a green paradise, offering solutions to help create a more sustainable future.
However, Dubai’s ambitious plans for Expo 2020 supports not just the theme of sustainability but various other long-term visions that the city has, including the UAE Vision 2021, Dubai Plan 2021, and the United Nations’ 2030 agenda for sustainable development.
Among the main highlights of Dubai’s ambitious plans for Expo 2020 include-
Known as the land of deserts, the Emirates had plans to turn the desert into a lush green and sustainable oasis with beautifully designed unique buildings, covering a huge area of almost 4.40 square kilometers.
Additionally, the expo, in cooperation with the Dubai Municipality, has allocated an area of 220,000 square meters to a nursery for trees & plants for cultivating more than 12K trees and over 2.5 lakh shrubs and a huge selection of herbs & flowering plants.
Dubai’s vision here is to turn the location of the event into an artistic paradise of greenery so as to attract visitors from across the globe. With over 70 percent of the venue shaded by green canopies, visitors will experience and enjoy natural solutions and an abundance of areas landscaped without the use of chemical pesticides or fertilizers.
Prioritizing Water Consumption
In Expo 2020, the Gulf city plans to adopt robust water consumption systems & smart controls for metering and irrigation, with the aim of reusing various sources of water such as wastewater and groundwater discharge management.
The expo’s location will see Dubai featuring massive areas neatly decorated by plants using drip irrigation techniques, including the Jubilee Park and the Al Fursan Park, which can accommodate 1,500 and 2,500 people, respectively.
Generation of Clean Energy
Dubai aims to use the stage provided by Expo 2020 to produce clean energy through various renewable resources while reducing the overall consumption of energy, especially in areas such as building efficiency and exterior lighting.
With an estimated cost of over Dh 277 million for the irrigation and landscaping projects spanning across 3.57 square kilometers, Dubai is all set for the start of Expo 2020 in collaboration with its municipality. They have also delivered over 863,000 plants, valued at Dh 22.5 million approximately.
This is a significant project that will add to the landscape of Dubai. The aim here is to reduce the amount of sand & dust in the air using trees, and also to highlight Dubai municipality’s efforts to realize the dream of ‘Integrated Dubai Strategy to Protect Water Resources 2030.’
Minimizing the Carbon Footprint
The city aims to minimize carbon emissions through a robust strategy to reduce & offset greenhouse gases along with various other public transport initiatives to further decrease the carbon footprint.
